Ideal for frontline care workers, clinical staff and team leaders who need practical
infection prevention knowledge they can apply in everyday care.

Clinical waste is waste produced through medical, nursing or other clinical activities that has the potential to cause injury, infection or offence. This can include blood and body fluids, visibly blood-stained materials or equipment, human tissue and certain other potentially infectious materials. Support workers should know how to identify clinical waste so it can be handled and disposed of safely.

Support workers should identify and separate clinical waste from general waste and follow their organisation’s procedures for safe handling, storage and disposal. Appropriate PPE and standard precautions should be used where there is a risk of exposure to blood, body fluids or potentially infectious material. Nursing Solutions Group’s Waste Management course teaches support workers how to manage clinical and potentially infectious waste safely in home and community care settings.

Clinical waste has the potential to cause injury, infection or offence and includes certain waste contaminated with blood, body fluids or other potentially infectious material. General waste does not present the same clinical risk and can usually enter the normal waste stream. Knowing the difference helps support workers dispose of waste safely and avoid placing potentially hazardous materials in general waste.

Used needles and other sharps should be placed into an appropriate sharps container and should not be placed loose in general household or recycling bins. Correct sharps disposal helps prevent needlestick injuries and accidental exposure to blood-borne infections. Nursing Solutions Group’s Waste Management course includes safe sharps management as part of its training for support workers.

If a needlestick injury occurs, NSW Health advises washing the affected area with soap and water for at least 30 seconds and seeking medical assessment and treatment. Support workers should also follow their organisation’s incident reporting and exposure procedures. Knowing how to respond to waste-related incidents is an important part of safe waste management in care settings.
