There are eight types of reportable incidents under the Serious Incident Response Scheme (SIRS): unreasonable use of force, unlawful sexual contact or inappropriate sexual conduct, psychological or emotional abuse, unexpected death, stealing or financial coercion by a staff member, neglect, inappropriate use of restrictive practices, and unexplained absence from care. Suspected or alleged incidents may also need to be reported, even if they have not yet been confirmed.

Priority 1 incidents are more urgent reportable incidents and must be reported to the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission within 24 hours of becoming aware of them. Priority 2 incidents are other reportable incidents that do not meet the Priority 1 criteria and must generally be reported within 30 days. Understanding how incidents are classified helps aged care workers and providers respond and escalate concerns appropriately.

A Priority 1 SIRS incident must be reported within 24 hours, while a Priority 2 incident must be reported within 30 days of the provider becoming aware of it. Reportable incidents are notified to the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission through the My Aged Care provider portal.

Aged care workers should first follow their organisation’s procedures to protect the safety and wellbeing of the person involved and report the incident to the appropriate staff member. Incidents should be documented accurately and managed through the provider’s Incident Management System. Workers should understand their role in recognising, responding to and escalating incidents so the provider can meet its SIRS obligations.

Workers who may need to recognise, respond to or report incidents in aged care should understand their responsibilities under SIRS and their organisation’s incident management procedures. Nursing Solutions Group’s online SIRS course is designed for support workers, Assistants in Nursing, Registered Nurses, lifestyle staff, hospitality staff and team leaders, helping them understand how to recognise abuse and neglect and respond appropriately to incidents.
