Course Overview
Stop infection in its tracks. Learn the essentials of effective hand hygiene and the correct way to put on and remove PPE, helping protect yourself, the people you support and those around you.
PPE and hand hygiene are two of the most important measures used to prevent the spread of infection. Correct hand hygiene, together with the safe use, application and removal of PPE, helps reduce the risk of contamination and protects both workers and the people they support. This is particularly important when caring for a person with an infectious disease, where incorrect PPE technique can increase the risk of infection transmission.
Knowing the correct sequence matters too. PPE must be put on and removed in the right order, with hand hygiene performed at key points during the process, to minimise the risk of contamination.

What are the 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene?
The 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene identify the key times healthcare and care workers should clean their hands: before touching a person, before a procedure, after a procedure or body fluid exposure risk, after touching a person, and after touching their surroundings. The framework is designed to reduce the risk of microorganisms being transmitted between workers, clients and their environment.
When should PPE be worn in healthcare and support work?
PPE should be selected and worn according to the task being performed and the potential risk of exposure to infectious material. Depending on the situation, PPE may include gloves, masks, gowns and eye protection. Nursing Solutions Group’s PPE and Hand Hygiene course teaches workers when and how to use different types of PPE and how to remove and dispose of them safely to help prevent cross-contamination.
Do you need to wash your hands after wearing gloves?
Yes. Wearing gloves does not replace hand hygiene. Hand hygiene should be performed before putting on gloves and after removing them, as well as at other appropriate moments during care. This is important because gloves are not always a complete barrier and hands can also become contaminated while gloves are being removed.
When should support workers wear gloves?
Support workers should wear gloves when there is a risk of contact with blood or body fluids, non-intact skin, mucous membranes, contaminated items or other situations where gloves are required as part of infection control precautions. Gloves are not necessary for every care activity, and appropriate hand hygiene should still be performed before and after glove use.

Why are PPE and hand hygiene important in aged care and disability support?
PPE and effective hand hygiene help reduce the risk of infections spreading between workers, clients and their surroundings. This is particularly important in care environments where workers may provide personal care, assist with procedures or come into contact with bodily fluids and potentially contaminated surfaces. Understanding when to perform hand hygiene and how to use PPE correctly is an important part of safe care.
